How to Choose an Air Fryer
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
Air fryers are popular because they cook quickly and use less oil than deep frying. But the range is huge, and the most expensive model is not always the best fit. Here is what to check before you buy.
Start with capacity
Capacity is the most important choice. As a rough guide, a small drawer of around 2 to 3 litres suits one or two people, 4 to 5 litres suits a small family, and 6 litres or more suits larger households or batch cooking.
Think about how you cook. If you often cook a whole chicken or a full tray for guests, look at a larger drawer or a dual-zone model. If you mostly reheat or cook for one, a big machine will just waste worktop space and electricity.
Single drawer or dual zone
A single drawer is simple and usually cheaper. A dual-zone model has two separate baskets, so you can cook a main and a side at different settings at the same time. This is useful for families, but the machine is larger and the cleaning doubles.
Power and heat-up time
Most UK air fryers run between roughly 1,300 and 2,700 watts. More power can mean faster heating, but it also uses more energy. Do not judge by wattage alone: airflow design matters as much as the number on the box.
Controls
Digital controls with presets are convenient, but simple dials are easier to use and often last longer. Look for a clear temperature range, a timer with an automatic shut-off, and a display that is easy to read from a distance.
Cleaning
This decides whether you will keep using it. Check that the basket and drawer are removable, non-stick, and dishwasher-safe if that matters to you. Read buyer reviews about the coating wearing off after a few months.
Size and noise
Measure your worktop and the space above it, because many models need clearance around the vents. Fan noise varies, so look at reviews that mention it if you have an open-plan home.
Common mistakes
- Buying a very large model and using only a fraction of it.
- Ignoring cleaning: a basket that is hard to wash gets left in the cupboard.
- Paying extra for presets you will never use.
Who might skip it
If you have very little worktop space and rarely cook small portions, a good oven with a fan setting may already do the job.
