General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.

Blenders range from small personal cups to heavy-duty jugs. The right one depends on what you plan to blend and how often.

What will you blend?

Smoothies with soft fruit are easy for most blenders. Ice, frozen fruit, nuts, and hot soups need more power and a stronger jug. Decide on your main use first.

Power

Higher wattage generally means better performance with tough ingredients, but design counts too. Blade shape and jug shape affect how well food circulates. Read reviews that describe real results with ice and frozen fruit.

Jug material

Glass is heavy and scratch-resistant but can break. Good plastic is lighter and safer to drop. Check that any plastic is BPA-free, and that the lid seals properly.

Jug or personal cup

Personal blenders are compact and convenient for one portion. A full jug is better for families, soups, and sauces. Think about how much counter space and storage you have.

Noise

Blenders are loud. If you blend early in the morning, look for reviews that mention noise levels.

Cleaning

Removable blades are easier to clean but have a seal to maintain. Many jugs can be cleaned by blending warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Check whether parts are dishwasher-safe.

Common mistakes

  • Overfilling the jug.
  • Blending very hot liquid in a sealed jug without venting.
  • Buying on wattage alone.

Who might skip it

If you only blend soup occasionally, a hand-held stick blender is cheaper and easier to store.
