How to Choose a Coffee Machine
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
The best coffee machine is the one you will actually use. The main choice is between convenience and control, and between running cost and quality.
Machine types
Filter machines brew larger quantities at a low cost. Pod and capsule machines are the quickest and cleanest, but each cup costs more. Bean-to-cup machines grind and brew fresh coffee at the touch of a button, but cost more and need maintenance. Manual espresso machines give the most control but need practice.
Running costs
Work out the cost per cup, not just the machine price. Pods can be expensive over a year. Whole beans and ground coffee are usually cheaper per cup.
Maintenance
Descaling, cleaning milk systems, and replacing filters are part of owning a machine. A machine that is hard to clean will end up unused.
Milk drinks
If you like lattes or cappuccinos, check how the machine froths milk and how easy the wand or jug is to clean.
Size and noise
Measure your counter. Bean-to-cup machines are large and loud when grinding.
Common mistakes
- Buying a complex machine you will not clean.
- Ignoring the long-term cost of pods.
- Using stale beans, which spoils even the best machine.
Who might skip it
If you drink coffee occasionally, a simple cafetiere or pour-over set costs very little and makes excellent coffee.
